Well London wins award!
We're delighted to report that LSx and the Well London Alliance Partnership has won a Health Promotion and Community Wellbeing award from the Royal Society for Public Health. The award recognises Well London's achievements in improving mental health and wellbeing and and promoting healthy eating, exercise and access to open spaces in 20 of the most disadvantaged communities in London. The award will be presented at the House of Lords later in the month.

Cleaner Air 4 Schools project underway
LSx is working with Transport for London and the Greater London Authority to develop an Air Quality Toolkit for schools. The toolkit will include resources for schools to deliver air quality community science projects as well as advice for reducing air quality impacts of school travel and buildings. Initially working with three schools in the Marylebone area, the Clean Air 4 Schools project aims to engage parents, teachers, pupils and school governors, helping them understand the importance of air quality as well as influencing behaviours.

LSx holds event to discuss riots
The Not Putting the Lid Back On event played host to a range of productive discussions about the riots and their causes, involving local authorities, business, voluntary groups, the police and the community. Delegates formed a range of innovative collaborative action plans aimed at creating more cohesive communities, including projects to empower young people, improved communication between community and police and a coordinated open spaces project. Plans for first community-owned solar PV project in London
Brixton Energy Co-operative is seeking investment to set up the first community-owned solar PV project in London. It is hoped the panels will go on the roofs of a social housing estate in the Brixton Low Carbon Zone. Brixton Energy Co-operative aim to reduce dependence on big energy companies, tackle fuel poverty, develop opportunities for community investment and provide training and employment for young people.To find out more or to get involved, visit the Transition Brixton website.

Londoners Love Trees project launched
Trees for Cities has launched an exciting new project, Londoners Love Trees, which will see 9,000 new trees planted across 15 London Boroughs. Four thousand volunteers will be involved in growing, planting, surveying and caring for the trees. They will have the opportunity to receive a wide range of training in urban forestry and community tree planting, with accredited options available. The project is in partnership with the Tree Council, the London Tree Officers Association and Barcham Tress and funded by Team London. Go here to find out more. |

Green journeys to be rewarded
Recylebank and Transport for London have announced plans for an incentive scheme offering award points for distance cycled or walked in the Capital. The scheme is aimed at helping reduce pollution, ease congestion and boost fitness among Londoners. The free-to-join scheme will be smartphone-based and the award points will be redeemable against a variety of different offers and discounts from Recylebank reward partners. A test version of the scheme will be rolled out later this year, with plans to go live in Spring 2012.

Go Schumacher Institute sustainable careers toolkit - The Schumacher Institute for Sustainable Systems will be running a 12-month part-time postgraduate programme for people wishing to move into more sustainable careers. They are aiming to begin teaching The Sustainability Toolkit: For the Transition to Sustainable Work in London in 2012. For more information go here
Blackheath Holistic and Wellness Fayre - Blackheath Quaker Hall will play host to a Holistic and Wellness Fayre. Proceeds will go to Demelza Hospice Care for Children. The Fayre will showcase taster massage therapies, energy healing, ethical stalls, food stalls and various talks on healing, fitness, nutrition and more. The Fayre will take place from 10.30am to 5.30pm on Saturday 12 November. To find out more, contact Nicola Hull.
Engaging Communities on Climate Change event - This workshop looks at the problems surrounding community engagement on climate change, explores key methods of breaking down barriers and explains how to guide individuals, groups and organisations in measuring their carbon footprints and taking positive action. The event will take place from 10am to 4pm on Thursday 1 December at the Town and Country Planning Association headquarters at Carlton House. More information here
Castle Debates - The current six-month run of Castle Debates, hosted by the Law Society, has an environmental focus. The next debate will be on the topic of Waste Policy. It will take place from 9.30am to 11.30am on Thursday 1 December at the Law Society offices on Chancery Lane. Find out more here
Sustainable Fish City Awards - The Sustainable Fish City Awards recognise best practise amongst restaurants and caterers.The competition is organised by the City of London Corporation in conjunction with Raymond Blanc, Sustainable Fish City, the Fishmongers Company and SeaWeb Seafood Choices. Safer parks awards and seminars
Applications for the 2012 Safer Parks Award will open soon. The awards recognise those parks whole community feels safe to use, with low incidences of anti-social behaviour. In anticipation of the awards, City Hall is hosting a series of seminars on making the most of London’s parks and open spaces. Sowing the Seeds: nature and London's children
The London Sustainable Development Commission (LSDC) will launch its Sowing the Seeds: Reconnecting London’s Children with Nature report on Thursday 17 November at City Hall. Written by one of the UK’s leading childhood experts, Tim Gill, the report looks at the crucial role that regular contact with nature plays in children’s health, wellbeing and respect for the environment. Mayor launches new climate change strategy
The Mayor of London has launched a new climate change strategy, Delivering London’s Energy Future, which sets out his plans for tackling climate change and securing low carbon energy supplies in the capital. The strategy focuses on reducing London’s CO2 emissions by 60 per cent of 1990 levels by 2025. The Mayor hopes to achieve this through retrofitting homes and public sector buildings, setting ten Low Carbon Zones the target of reducing CO2 emissions across the country by 20% by 2012, a decentralised energy programme and various other policies and activities aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from new development and transport through the London Plan and the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.
